 Session 1: Preparing To Stop

AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

1.    to motivate to make the decision to stop;

2.     to assist in the process of stopping smoking, and

3.        to maintain non-smoking and prevent relapse.

 In discussing the aims, I draw your attention to the various components of the program that have been designed to achieve these aims with you.

In Session 1 you will get detailed information about the IHC program, how it works, and what to expect. We help you determine your readiness to quit smoking, and to reduce your ambivalence about quitting. This week we also help you begin believing that you actually can quit smoking.

 Summary: it is OK for people to feel unsure about stopping at this stage. The purpose of the programme is to work through these issues. Emphasis that you  have taken the first step towards becoming a non-smoker by coming along to the program.
